Trade-In vs Selling for Cash: What's the Difference?

Same inspection, different outcome — cash in hand, or value applied toward your next device.

Two smartphones side by side on a counter, one being handed over as a trade-in

These two options confuse a lot of first-time sellers because the process looks identical up front — same WhatsApp quote, same inspection. The difference only shows up at the very end, in how you get paid. Here's the actual breakdown.

The inspection is identical

Whether you're selling outright or trading in, your device goes through the same condition-based inspection — model, storage, physical condition, battery health, lock status and originality of parts, exactly as described in our device-checking process. Nothing about the inspection changes depending on which option you pick.

Selling for cash

You receive payment directly once you accept the final offer. This is the simpler of the two options if you just want money for the device and aren't buying anything from us right now.

Trading in

Your device's value is applied toward a pre-owned device from ReDevice instead of a cash payout — see our trade-in FAQ for upgrade/downgrade details. If the pre-owned device you want costs more than your trade-in value, you top up the difference; if it costs less, ask us about the remaining balance.

A worked example

Say your old phone is inspected and offered at a certain value, and you've got your eye on a pre-owned device from our stock. Trading in applies that value directly against the pre-owned device's price, so you're only paying the difference — versus selling for cash and then paying full price separately. Ask us on WhatsApp for a real quote on both your device and the one you want, so you can compare the two side by side.

Which should you choose?

If you need a replacement device anyway, trade-in saves a step. If you just want cash, sell outright — either way, start with a WhatsApp quote.

Can I change my mind after choosing?

Talk to us before you finalise anything — since the inspection and the payout method are separate steps, there's usually flexibility right up until you accept the final offer. Ask on WhatsApp if you're unsure which way you'll want to go.

This guide is general information, not a guarantee of value or outcome for your specific device — your estimated quote and final offer depend on your device's actual condition.
